Chapter Fifteen

CARRICK STOOD there, Mateo by his side and wondered how the hell they’d gone from having wild, passionate sex—no, not just sex, making love—just the night before to her storming away after telling him off.

Didn’t she understand he was only looking out for her wellbeing? She’d been living with debilitating exhaustion for ten months, according to what she’d told them. Why on earth would she think it was the least bit smart to go on a recovery mission where guaranteed there’d be fighting?

He sat heavily back onto his chair and scrubbed his hands down his face before turning to scan the men sitting around the table. “Do any of you think it’s a good idea for her to join the mission? She’d be a liability to the team and a danger to herself and whoever had to help her.”

All but one of them shook their head, agreeing with his assessment. When he saw Etienne lean forward, elbows on the table and hands clasped, the man’s gaze drilling him, Carrick waited, knowing he was carefully formulating what he was going to say.

Etienne was the most intense and serious of the group, next to Dak, and Carrick was one of the few who knew he also had something key in common with Nia. They’d both lost siblings to murder, Etienne’s several years back, and they suspected Denton was behind it. He didn’t have to wait long for him to speak up.

“When they murdered Darley, vengeance and retribution was a living thing in me. He was all that remained of my family. He kept me centered when I stayed inside my head too much. All I could think of, all I could focus on, day and night, was finding Denton and killing him—slowly and painfully. Making him suffer. The fact I wasn’t able to has eaten away at me all these years. That we weren’t able to find where they’d held my brother, or save anyone still captive—to put an end to Denton—still haunts me. Think hard about this, Carrick. You don’t want this to be the one thing that splits you apart before you’re even mated.”

Carrick heard and understood what he was saying, but if she went with them, chances were she would die. Or he would, trying to save her.

Because no way in fucking hell would he let anyone harm one hair on her head, or any other part of her beautiful, precious body. He would rather have her alive, and not with him—as fucking painful as that thought was—than have her dead and buried like her sister.

“I hear you, man. I do. But the thought of her dying, of Denton or one of his goons killing her; or capturing her when we’re busy fighting and hiding her away again? That’s like a knife to my heart. To my soul.”

Etienne gave him a long, somber look before shooting him a chin lift, silently letting him know he supported whatever decision he made. When Mateo laid a hand on his shoulder, Carrick turned and gave him a humorless smile.
